Valery Goppa
Valery Denisovich Goppa ((ロシア語:Вале́рий Дени́сович Го́ппа); born 1939〔Stepan G. Korneev, (Soviet scientists - honorary members of foreign scientific societies. ) Nauka, Moscow, 1981; p. 41〕) is a Soviet and Russian mathematician.
He discovered the relation between algebraic geometry and codes. Today these codes are called Goppa codes.〔William Cary Huffman, Vera Pless, (Fundamentals of error-correcting codes. ) Cambridge University Press, 2003, ISBN 0-521-78280-5; p. 521〕 In 1981 he presented his discovery at the algebra seminar of the Moscow State University. In 1972 he won the best paper award of the IEEE Information Theory Society for his paper "A new class of linear correcting codes".
